Avonex (interferon beta 1a)

Avonex is a disease modifying drug (DMD) that is prescribed for relapsing remitting Multiple sclerosis. It is a self injection that you inject into your muscle once a week. It comes as a preloaded pen or preloaded syringe and as a powder form. Your MS Nurse will discuss with you what one would be more practical and easier for you to use and give you full training.

Side effects

Common side effect can include

  • flu-like symptoms
  • headache
  • injection site reactions
  • blood cell abnormalities
  • feeling weak or tired
  • difficulty sleeping
  • diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting
  • muscular or joint pain
  • depression

Less Common side effects can include

  • changes in menstruation (periods)
  • liver abnormalities
  • allergic reactions
  • heart problems and high blood pressure
  • hair thinning or loss
  • damage to small blood vessels leading to kidney problems
